Loco 5112 is behind a fence. The footplate has plastic/glass doors protecting the controls. From a distance appears to have a full set of levers, gauges etc.

NSWGR 5112 was withdrawn in 1974 after travelling over 1,200,000 miles. Australia's 16th Prime Minister, Mr Chifley was an engine driver at Bathurst and often drove 5112. Bathurst council in the late 70's obtained 5112 to honour him. It was put on display at the railway station. Removed late 80's and went to Orange for renovation. The loco was dismantled but the project stalled. In 2005 the loco moved to Lithgow and later Branxton. Hunter Valley railway Trust rebuilt it to display standard. In 2010 the loco returned to Bathurst and is now under a weather roof in the station forecourt. See album photo.

5112 is a member of the NSWGR D50 class "Std Goods". All together 590 basically similar locomotives were constructed in three different classes, the D50, D53 and D55 class. 5112 is one of the original Saturated type. It was saved from scraping due to its close conection with former Australian Prime Minister Joesoeph Benidict Chifley, who drove this locomotive before his entry into politics.

The engine was steamed from the scrap roads to its plinth at Bathurst Station c1975 and was the subject of an abortive attempt at restoration to working order in the 80/90's, the restoration work being mainly completed and the engine test steamed before politics interfered & the project languished. At present the locomotive is at the Bathurst Council Works Depot awaiting another restoration attempt. This engine is in excellant condition Boiler Wise.
