Ordered by the South West Timber Hewers Co-op Soc. Shipped to Fremantle in kit form and assembled at the Midland Junction railway workshops. Received the name THE HEWER. Started work at Lucknow Mill, Collie. In 1912 moved to Holyoake Mill. In 1913 the Timber Co-op company was bought by the Western Australia Government which formed the State Saw Mills. In 1942 it went to Midland Junction workshops for maintenance. Here it lost its name and was renumber SSM 2. Also maybe it was where it acquired at least one WAGR fitting in its cab. For the next 20 odd years it worked at Deanmill, Holyoake & Pemberton. Withdrawn in 1966.

In 1967 put on display at Manjimup. In 2002 donated to Pemberton Tramway where it now sits on a siding along with Y class diesels and a breakdown crane.

According to the Beyer Peacock works list, no. 5475 was built as a 4-6-0

Steve Frost is quite right the State Saw Mills loco SSM 2 is a 4-6-0, not a 2-6-0. In this respect it differs from SSM 7, a 2-6-0 which has been displayed in Pemberton WA for many years. The later loco was built in Austalia by James Martin & Co in 1895 for the WAGR under licence from Beyer Peacock of Manchester UK. SSM 2 was built by BP in Manchester in 1911. Although BP built many locos for the Australian Government Railways no. SSM 2 was the only one built new for the State Saw Mills.

Is it a 2-6-0? The photo shows the correct number and it certainly looks like a Beyer Peacock design of that period, but there's a 4 wheel truck at the front end. I'll change it to a 4-6-0 unless there are any objections!

Ex State Saw Mills No. SSM 2, a 2-6-0 , formerly located in Manjimup, Western Australia. In 2004 the loco was moved to Pemberton WA for possible restoration. I presume it is still there. The loco is seen on 10 Nevember 2004
