A lucky survivor. The little North Eastern Railway class C (LNER class J21) were useful on both freight and passenger trains, and for some years were associated with the trans-Pennine Stainmore route with its difficult winter conditions. Well, if 16 foot deep snowdrifts don't make railway working difficult, I don't know what does! Anyway, this particular loco was withdrawn from service as long ago as 1939, but was returned to service because of the Second World War, finally being withdrawn after another 20 odd years of service in 1962.

For a while it saw some use in NER green livery at Beamish Museum, but has now passed to the Locomotive Conservation and Learning Trust who have ambitions to return it to working order as an educational project for young people.

The new primary photo shows the loco following some reassembly and basic cosmetic work for a visit to the Stainmore Railway site in Kirkby Stephen for an event to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Stainmore Railway. It is normally under cover now. To see it in something like North Eastern Railway livery, see the older photo in the album. There is also a photo of it after arrival at Shildon in a part dismantled state.
