The ex LMS Black Five 4-6-0 No. 45163, has now been moved onto the main workshops of Riley & Son Engineering Ltd. for its restoration to mainline standards to really progress now.

The ex LMS Black Five 4-6-0 No. 45163, has been relocated to Riley & Son Engineering Ltd’s new larger engineering site at Bury in Lancashire, where its restoration to mainline standards is continuing on there.

Riley & Son Engineering Ltd. have relocated to a new larger site at irlam works in Bury in Lancashire, where the restoration of ex LMS Black Five 4-6-0 No. 45163, from Barry Scrapyard condition to mainline standards is continuing on there now.

The ex LMS Black Five 4-6-0 No. 45163, has now left the Colne Valley Railway in Essex, and has now relocated to Riley & Son Engineering Ltd. at Heywood in Lancashire, for the final stage of restoration from Barry Scrapyard condition to mainline standards.

The ex LMS Black Five 4-6-0 No. 45163, (known as the "Highland Hiker" is to return to the mainline following a deal with a partership with its owners the 45163 Ltd and Riley & Son Engineering Ltd. owners of ex LMS Black Five’s No. 45407 “The Lancashire Fusilier” and 44871 along with No. 45212 on loan to them from the the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. The partnership will see No. 45163 leave the Colne Valley Railway and be relocated to Riley & Son Engineering Ltd. at Heywood in Lancashire, where its restoration from Barry Scrapyard condition will be completed to mainline standards which will see the fitment of air-braking and main line electronic equipment – in return for the long-term loan of the locomotive to Riley & Son Engineering Ltd. The hire agreement will run for 25 years, and will then end with the return of the locomotive to the 45163 Ltd in working order. Provision has also been made for it to visit other preserved railways around the UK, including the Colne Valley Railway and the West Somerset Railway. It is hope the work will be completed by 2027 which will see No. 45163 working on Network Rail metals on railtours and could even see it working the Jacobite Trains on the West Highland Line in Scotland.

Of course, the ex LMS locomotive No. 5163 was later, from 010148, in fact British Railways No. 45163 which should be included correctly for world observers to the site please.

A milestone was reached in the restoration of ex LMS Black Five 4-6-0 No. 45163, as the locomotive was paced on its wheels along the refitting of the smokebox and door. The tender frames have been placed a pair of trollies to be moved round for the next stage of restoration.

The owners of LMS Black Five No. 45163 will be opening their doors to members of the public to view the restoration progress of the locomotive during the Colne Valley Railway’s Miniature Gala on the 10th of May 2020.
