One of a large class of locos, yet a unique engine. William Stanier's classic mixed traffic 4-6-0 looks right and proved to be right. Only towards the end of the building of the class did any significant variations begin. Some experimental use of roller bearings, Caprotti poppet valve gear and double chimneys appeared in the 1940's.

44767 was unique as the only one ever built with outside Stephenson's link valve gear. Outside Stephenson's link is rare in the UK anyway, but in the 1940's new construction ignored it, normally. It was also built with roller bearing axle boxes, a double chimney and electric lighting. Restored for the Stockton and Darlington 150 celebrations, it was named 'George Stephenson' at that event. Since then it has waorked widely on the main line and on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway as shown in the photo.
