1774 is one of 6 Southern Pacific moguls still surviving out of a class of 335. When built, she was a fast passenger engine as well as a freight engine. As locomotives became larger, she, and her sisters found work as "light duty" engines, yet were powerful for their size. They were known as "Valley mallets" and most spent their time in the Sacramento & San Joaquin Valleys working locals.

This class M-8 Mogul 2-6-0 was built in 1902 by Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia for the Southern Pacific Railroad. This is generally a freight and switching type locomotive.
