The ex Southern Railway Schools Class 4-4-0 No. 926 "Repton" has been fitted with a Lemaitre chimney and blastpipe over the winter months as a trial by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to see how well the locomotive steams and performs on lower quality coal over a season or two. This chimney and blastpipe modification was carried out on a number of Maunsell Schools Class 4-4-0’s during the 1930’s and 1940’s under the Southern Railway’s then Chief Mechanical Engineer "Oliver Bulleid". If successful the North Yorkshire Moors Railway may use this blastpipe modification on other steam locomotives in its steam fleet in future.

Along with Greyhound 30120, Schools class Repton will be visiting the Great Central for their Autumn Gala. She is the first V class to visit the GCR since 30925 Cheltenham in 2012. Once again, this gala has a distinct Southern theme.

I often rode on the  '926' when it was a part of the Cape Breton Steam Railway in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada during the 1970's.  It was impressive to say the least.  Would anyone have any up-to-date photographs of the icon.  Riding on the 926 during my youth was one of my favourite past times.  The sight of her brings back lots of good memories.

'Repton' is in need of new tyres to the drivers. It is hoped that it can see use this season, after which it will be withdrawn for the work to be done.

This is one of the Southern Railway's class V 4-4-0s; all were named after public schools, hence the title 'Schools Class'. Built surprisingly late for a 4-4-0, at a time   when 4-6-0s and Pacifics were top link power elsewhere, they were the last British 4-4-0s and, it is claimed by many, Europe's largest and most powerful 4-4-0s. With 3 cylinders and a big boiler they showed their power working from Waterloo to Bournemouth at speeds up to 90mph.

Repton was originally restored to Southern Railway livery and exported to the USA, being exhibited at Steamtown, Vermont. Fitted with a headlight and centre couplers, it was loaned to the Cape Breton Steam Railway, Nova Scotia, in 1974. Returning to the UK, 'Repton' has been based on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway since 1989. Despite some peoples' doubts about a large wheeled 4-4-0 on 1 in 49 banks, it has aquitted itself well over the years. I rode behind it on a damp day, and expected problems on the bank, but I was dead wrong. Not a sign of a slip.
