The Hudswell Clark built J94 Austerity 0-6-0ST No. 68067 (ex NCB Bold Colliery (War Department No. 75091) No. 7 "Robert"), is now back home to the Great Central Railway following its failed visit to the Bluebell Railway for their Branch Line Gala in March. The reason why No. 68067 failed was that it had leaking boiler tubes which the locomotive has since been repaired and is now back in service and will be operating on good Easter Friday at the Great Central Railway on not one, but two full goods trains, showcasing the strength of steam power.

This is the history and detail of the Hudswell Clark built J94 Austerity 0-6-0ST No. 68067 (ex NCB Bold Colliery (War Department No. 75091) No. 7 "Robert"). This locomotive was built in 1943 to a Hunslet Engine Company design by Hudswell Clarke of Leeds for the Ministry of Defence and entered service as WD75091. From new, the locomotive was sent to the War Department’s Transportation Store Depot at Marchwood in Hampshire in November 1943, after which, the loco spent time at Southampton Docks on loan to the Southern Railway as its first location during its long and colourful career. Between 1943 and 1945, it was deployed at Norton Fitzwarren near Taunton, a Central Ordnance Depot used by the US Army. When the war in Europe ended in 1945, it returned to Marchwood before moving to King’s Newton in Derbyshire—a Transportation Stores Depot. In March 1947, the locomotive was transferred to Thatcham in Berkshire, serving as a general stores sub-depot, and then returned to King’s Newton in December 1948. Along with many other Austerity locomotives, WD75091 was acquired by the National Coal Board. In October 1950, it was sent to Holly Bank Colliery near Wolverhampton, where it was renumbered as No. 2. After Holly Bank Colliery closed in December 1952, the locomotive moved to Littleton Colliery in Staffordshire in 1959, Littleton itself closing in December 1993. It later moved between several collieries before arriving at Bold Colliery near St Helens in February 1978, where it was named "Robert". While at Bold, it was prepared for and participated in the Rocket 150 celebrations at nearby Rainhill in 1980. The locomotive was withdrawn and sold for preservation in 1982, eventually being preserved at the Crewe Heritage Centre. In 2007, it was purchased by Roger Hibbert and moved to Quorn & Woodhouse on the Great Central Railway (GCR), arriving in November 2007. Since then, it has undergone a full restoration to working order and returning to service in 2017. Now renumbered as No. 68067—taking the number from the scrapped J94 class locomotive WD71474 that was sheded at Colwick in BR days (withdrawn in 1971)—the locomotive spent 2018 at the Midland Railway Butterley. After a year-long loan to them, it was based at the Great Central Railway (Nottingham) until its time there was curtailed by Covid-19 in late 2020. It then enjoyed an extended stint at the Llangollen Railway in Wales and spent time at the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway before returning to the GCR in January 2025, since then No. 68067 ("Robert") has been a very popular locomotive at the Great Central Railway and out on the heritage railway circuit too.
