KATIE was built at Duffield Bank workshops. Katie was the first of 3 locomotives sold to Duke of Westminster for his Eaton Hall Railway, built to connect the estate with the railway station at Balderton. This 15 inch gauge railway operated from 1896 to 1946 mostly for moving coal, timber, bricks etc. A few passenger wagons and carriages were used over the years. The railway obtained petrol locomotives in 1922 so steam operations ceased.

Katie was first sold to the Ravenglass & Eskdale railway. 1922 sold to Llewellyn miniature railway, Southport. 1923 sold to Fairbourne railway in North Wales but was partially scrapped by them in 1926. In 1980 her frames were recovered from sand dunes near Fairbourne station. The Ravenglass railway and Station Road Steam Ltd, Metheringham have rebuilt the engine. She is now used on special days at Ravenglass & Eskdale railway.

Built to the designs of Sir Arthur Heywood, that great enthusiast for 15 inch gauge, this loco passed through a number of owners until it ended up as little more than the bare frames in the sand at Fairbourne in North Wales.

It is undergoing restoration to original condition with the aim of being back in steam in 2015, the centenary of the conversion of the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway to 15 inch gauge.

A working replica exists on the Perrygrove Railway which can be found on the site with a photo showing how this engine will look when the work is completed.
