In 2017 QJ 7119 was used in a experiment to see if a steam locomotive could operate on high pressure inert gas CO2. From a report from the Advanced Steam Traction Trust the Chinese 2-10-2 was trailed at Daban Depot with Gas which was piped up from a storage cylinder tank mounted on the tender. Which fed the CO2 Gas directly into the steam chest at a controlled pressure. The aim of it was to find a method of powering steam locomotives without polluting emissions. Sadly the experiments were not successful. QJ 7119 is currently in storage at Daban Depot with sister QJ 7038.

The Jitong Railway in Inner Mongolia North East China was the last mainline steam railway in the world from 1995 till 2005. The last official steam trains ran on the weekend of the 9th and 10 of December 2005 with a special passenger train on the 9th that ran from Daban over the Jingpeng Pass to Jingpeng and back double headed by QJs 7119 and 7038. The same 2 locos worked the very last steam hauled freight train the following day on the 10th bringing to a close the last Great Steam Show on the planet. But today Daban Depot now a diesel depot still has 12 QJs which 10 of them are on display but QJs 7119 and 7038 are still kept in working order as part of a small heritage fleet. As both 2-10-2s are steamed for steam special photo runs for tourist round the New Year. How long that will last with rumors the section over the Jingpeng Pass will be closed due to a new tunnel under the Pass is anybody s guess? But both QJs were still running in 2015.
