QJ 7049 is one of 14 QJ Class 2-10-2 locomotives that are still at Daban Depot on display as a reminder of what was the last great steam show on the planet. The QJ Class 2-10-2 is a icon for steam locomotives of China and was introduced in 1956. It was based on Russia’s FD Class 2-10-2s of the 1930s and their later LV Class 2-10-2s of the 1940s. Over 4714 QJ’s were built between 1956 right to 1988 as they where the last big modern mainline steam locomotives to be built in greater number in the world. The QJ’s were built at a number of locomotive works across China at places like Dalian, Tangshan, Shenyang, Mudanjiang, Changchun and the famous Datong works in North East, China which was where most of the them where built and the very last ones were built in 1988. The QJ Class was China’s heavy freight locomotive but they were also used on passenger trains as well as many QJ’s worked of China’s long distanced express trains and overnight sleeper trains with a top speed of 50mph. Their Boiler Pressure is rated at 14.7 bar / 213 psi along with Grate Area of 6.8 sq m with Total Heating Surface of 263 sq m with Superheater Area at 141 sq m. Their Driving Wheel Diameter is at 1500 mm with two outside cyliners with a Cylinders, Diameter/Stroke at 650 mm x 800 mm with Walschaerts Valve Gear. Their Tractive Effort is at 282 kN and they Overall Weight is 220 / 25300 tons and their Overall Length is 26.0 / 29.200 m and could carry up to 15 to 2200 tons of coal and 11000 gallons of water. Steam lasted on China Rail mainlines until 2002 as like all places around the world steam could not last forever but a 120 QJ locomotives where put to futher use on the Jitong Railway in Inner Mongolia, North East, China which was only built and open in 1995 and was 100% steam worked as this was where the QJ Class was best remembered working in pairs hauling heavy freight trains through the legendry Jingpeng Pass which was well known as the last great steam show on the planet from 1995 to 2005. Sadly in December 2005 the Jitong Railway was fully dieselised and the last 20 QJ steam locomotives where taken out of service. Sadly today their are no more QJ’s at work in China anymore as the last of them where taken out of service in 2010 but many have been preserved across and outside of China. QJ 7049 is one of 14 QJ Steam locomotives still at the Jitong Railway’s main depot at Daban on static display as a reminder of the last great steam show on the planet.

QJ 7049 was also one of the last steam locomotives in service on the Jitong Railway right to the end of steam there in 2005. Today 7049 is on static display with her surviving sister QJ 2-10-2’s at Daban depot as a reminder of the Jitong Railway’s steam heritage.
