The Small Loco Group have been delighted to announce the awarding of a £2,500 grant from the Veronica Awdry Charitable Trust towards the overhaul of ex British Sugar Corporation Hudswell Clarke built 0-6-0ST Works No. 1539 "Derek Crouch". Which the funding will be used to push forward the overhaul of the locomotives boiler and will cover the purchase of a new foundation ring and firehole door ring.

A milestone has been reached in the restoration of ex British Sugar Corporation Hudswell Clarke built 0-6-0ST Works No. 1539 "Derek Crouch" as her wheels have returned to Wansford after having work carried on them along with a brand new cylinder block to be fitted to the locomotive.

Work to overhaul ex British Sugar Corporation Hudswell Clarke built 0-6-0ST "Derek Crouch" to working condition has been given the go ahead by the Nene Valley Railway. Having not steamed for 30 years the Small Loco Group hope to have No. 1539 in steam by 2024 in time for its 100th birthday and the 50th anniversary of it working the very first passenger train on the preserved Nene Valley line back in 1974.

The former British Sugar Corporation Hudswell Clarke built 0-6-0ST "Derek Crouch" has been given a surprising Christmas present today. As the Small Loco Group has announced that the locomotive is to be put back in to steam as its to be overhauled. The group and the Nene Valley Railway will work together in the New Year to see what can be done and if all goes well the loco could be in steam by 2024.
