Despite appearances, this former Austrian loco does appear to date from that era - I checked some reputable sources on line and they agree the date as shown.

I very much doubt if this is a turn-of-the century 0-6-0 built in 1908. It looks like a Hungarian MAV class III (later class 335), 233 of which were built by Wiener-Neustadt in Austria and 18 by MAVAG in Budapest in 1869-78.

A great illustration of how they went about building a locomotive in continental Europe in the early 20th century.

Inside frames, flycranks and outside cylinders, with the valves, valve gear and steam chests between the frames. A contrast to the contemporary British 0-6-0 with its inside frames, inside cylinders and valve gear.

Both look antiquated by comparison with US locomotives of that era which were beginning to show outside valves and valve gear, and a more modern overall appearance.
