The Fort Worth & Denver was acquired by the Colorado & Southern as long ago as 1899. In 1908 the C&S was bought by the CB&Q who ran it as a subsidiary road. Under Texas law, however, all railroads in that state were required to have headquarters in Texas, so the FW&D and the C&S maintained their identity but remained in the ownership of the Burlington, hence CB&Q locos being used by them. An earlier note gives a full story of the loco and explains the numbering.

The 4994 was one of the CB&Q 01 Mikados leased by the C&S in the Fall of 1958 to replace diesels destroyed in two fatal head-on collisions (at Chugwater, WY and Broomfield, CO). These ran into early 1959. No. 4978, now at Mendota, IL, was another (the others were returned east and scrapped). No. 4994, kept at the C&S 7th St. roundhouse in Denver, reportedly supplied some grates to the 4960 when it visited Colorado. It was sent south to Lubbock about 1964 and painted as FW&D 401, an earlier 01-class 2-8-2 oilburner that had been scrapped.
