When this engine was in Puerto Rico, the line gauge would have been 3 foot. Was the engine gauge changed to/from meter?

Anyone who has seen the works plate will be able to see Anciens Etabst Cail No. 2296 1889. http://ferrocarrilespr.rogerseducationalpage.com/ shows American Railroad Co. Nos 1 to 27 were built by Cail under the works number range 2295 - 2321.

From where does Mr Ferguson get his information?

There seems to be some confusion about the origins of this loco. It was not built by Baldwin in the USA but by Anciens Etablissements Cail a Denain in Paris in 1889. It was built for the Compagnie Universelle du Interoceanique Canal de Panama (ie for use during the building of the Panama Canal. It was subsequently sold to the Fuerro de Puerto Rico. It is now active again on the Baie de Somme Railway at St. Valery, France as shown in the posted photograph.

I have a photograph of this engine in San Juan, Puerto Rico taken in April 1900 by a American photographer called William Sanger and it was operated by "La Compañía de los Ferrocarriles de Puerto Rico", the first company that operated the rail road on the Island before the American Railroad Company took over operations in 1904. There's another photo of this engine, dating from around the 1920's where it was at display at the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit.

hello, I have a 14 inch diameter, round Number Sign with a large '2' in the center, surrounded by the following: 'Baldwin Locomotive Works Philadelphia USA'. It came from a train in Puerto Rico, I believe it was the 'South Porto Rico Sugar Trading Company'. This number sign is made of brass or bronze. It appears to be from the early 1900's. I purchased it around 1963, from a North American gentleman who had a Coin, Stamp, & Collectibles Store in the town of Mayaguez Puerto Rico, where I grew up. He told me it came from Guanica, and that's where the S.P.R.S.T.C. train was located. Because of spammers, I don't want to leave my e-mail here, so I will check back in the future for any reply.

The locomotive is currently operational as indicated in France. The photo displayed was taken when the locomotive was still in Traverse City, MI in 1992 or so.

This engine was sold and left Traverse City around 1993. I believe she was shipped to France where she was going to be restored to operating condition.
