Current plans call for restoration following Buffalo Creek and Gauley No.4, using the boiler of the Graham County 1926. Most, if not all, of the parts she is missing outside are stored safely inside.

The Shay 7 is awaiting restoration. Most of its parts including parts of the boiler were made rust proof and stored several years ago. When BC&G 4 is done, Shay 7 and another 2-8-0 are the two highest candidates.

There is a rumor that 7 and 1926 will be moved on the shop floor asap, of course the space has to become available first.

It is  a sad fate that this locomotive is in.  The Cass Scenic Railroad can restore it back to operation but they do not have the time because they are bussy on the restorations of three shays, a heisler, and a Climax.  There are plans to give it a cosmetic restoration and display it at the Cass depot.

The photo that is shown on the main page was taken at the upper Gum Field (along Cass Scenic RR) during a special trip (because the locomotives are pulling the train rather than pushing it).  The locomotive that is following Shay 7 is Cass Scenic Railroad Shay #5 (aka Mower Lumber Company No. 5).  This photo was likely taken sometime between May 5, 1965 and May 20, 1967.  I assume from the letter stenciling on Shay 7 (which was actually painted on by Meadow River Lumber Company's shops prior to her trip to Cass in December of 1964) that this picture was most likely taken sometime during the 1965 season (possibly even on the day of Shay 5's return to operation on 5/5/65).  However, it is possible that the photo could have been taken during the 1966 season, because a similar photo taken near the same location (likely on the same day) was used in CSRR's 1967 marketing brochure.

Shay 7 has been out of operation since November of 1970 when it was discovered that the engine had several pits of erosion in the lining of its boiler.  Another boiler was purchased, but did not fit properly, and because of the arrival of Shays 2 and 3 in 1972, the engine was put on the "dead" siding at Cass, where it sits today, and will likely never return to operation (although there have been rumors that the shop has been talking of cosmetically restoring her for inclusion in the Whittaker Camp #1 display).
