This locomotive is still on display at Sunset Station, which also serves as the Amtrak Station for San Antonio. It appears to be well maintained as a display at this time.

The San Antonio Railroad Heritage Museum has recently established a division called the "Friends of the SP 794" which is devoted to the maintenance, restoration, and future operations of the SP 794. We are currently repainting the SP 794 as its appearance has been greatly diminished by the elements. We are seeking donations and contributions to restore the SP 794. Please visit our website at www.sp794.org. Gary Rodriguez President/CEO

I would love to believe this locomotive is operational again, but I must correct the previous commenter and say that it does not operate. It was painted and moved out of Maverick Park to the Sunset Station nightclub complex as outdoor decor and nothing more than that. What looks like LPG fuel tanks were probably something to make smoke (just for effect) during the club's Opening Night back around 1999. The nightclub was a huge flop and the locomotive will probably sit there until somebody decides it's in their way and then God Knows what will happen to it. It would not surprise me at all to see it suddenly get scrapped, considering the mentality of the Powers-That-Be in this town. San Antonio is The Bermuda Triangle of historical relics. Around here, they suddenly vanish into some scrap heap without a trace. I appealed to the Austin Steam Train Association to come save it, but all their funds are tied up in the repair of their own locomotive, which is the same basic model as this one. This would be a good candidate for an excursion train and if I were a millionaire I would already own it. Some millionaire needs to come get this one before it disappears.

This locomotive is no longer in Maverick Park in San Antonio.  For a long time I did not know where it was, until I found it sitting on a siding track at the Amtrak station/former Southern Pacific passenger station that has now been converted to a restaurant/bar complex just east of downtown San Antonio about 1 block off the freeway.  It has been restored to operating condition and appears to be fired by natural gas.
