It was built in 1929 to try out the concept of a 2-10-4 wheel arrangement.  This wheel arrangement was needed to provide stability on curves when the locomotive backed downgrade from Raton pass to Raton, New Mexico when in helper service.  The 2-10-2 locomotives then in use had problems in reverse to Raton.  The Santa Fe liked this locomotive, but the Great Depression of 1930 meant there was no money to buy others like it.  When they finally did purchase other locomotive of the 2-10-4 wheel arrangement it was in the late 1930s, and more modern innovations meant the newer models were of a different construction than this locomotive.  This locomotive is the only one of its type ever constructed.
