The locomotive entered service with the Prussian State Railways, Railway Directorate Elberfeld as No.2535 Elberfeld and in January was accepted into the DR - Reichseisenbahnen of the German Reich in the same guise. This became, from 09/1925 the DRG Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft and a month later was renumbered as 38 2383. The company became, from 02/1937 DRB - Deutsche Reichsbahn and in 08/1945 was ceded to the RBGD - Reichsbahn General Directorate of the British Zone of Occupation, Bielefeld , also as No. 38 2383. From 10/1946 the HVE - Head office of the railways of the American and British occupation areas took over following their merger and from 12/1948 the HVE as the Railway Department into the Transport Administration. From 09/1949 it became the new DB Deutsche Bundesbahn No. 38 2383 in West Germany that, in 01/1968 was computerised to No. 038 382-8 and worked until 1974 before being taken out of service at Rottweil. It was purchased the following year by Günter Knauß, Frankfurt-am-Main for DDM - Deutsches Dampflokomotiv-Museum, Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg as 38 2383, where it remains.

Ex DB No. 38.2383 the Deutsches Dampflokmotiv Museum at Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg on 13 October 1992. The loco is an example of an ex Prussian Railways (KPEV) class P8.
