The Work Plate of LMS Black Five No. 45428 'Eric Treacy'. It is one of the locos of this class built by outside locomotive manufacturers, in this case, Armstrong Whitworth on Tyneside. In the 1930's the Government gave finance to railway companies to scrap old locos and have new ones built with the aim of reducing unemployment. Armstrong Whitworth made their reputation in building warships and heavy guns and demand for such products evaporated with the end of the First World War. They turned to building railway locos, diesel lorries and some early diesel locos instead.
