Designed by G J Churchward, the design was introduced in 1911 and was a fine example of the benefits of GWR standardisation of parts, so much so that no prototype was built and the design went straight to production. Try that nowadays!

Batches of this design continued to be produced right up to 1932, a tribute to its rugged usefulness.
