'River Irt' began its life as an 0-8-0 tank loco and was named 'Muriel'. A rebuild in 1927 produced the 0-8-2 tender engine of today. The original 'Muriel' name plate is displayed in the museum at Ravenglass.

'Muriel' was built at Duffield Bank by Sir Arthur Heywood, a pioneer of the minimum gauge railway. The original builder's plate is displayed in the museum at Ravenglass.

The original side tank from 'Muriel' is displayed in the museum at Ravenglass along with part of the frame of another of Heywood's 15 inch gauge locos, 'Ella'.

The loco before rebuilt to a more 'narrow gauge' style. Here it has a low roof cab and a short chimney - more 'miniature railway, style.

'River Irt' in the shed at Ravenglass on 5 May 2019. Notice the electric blower on the chimney to draw the fire and get the boiler up to pressure. The headboard celebrates the loco's 125th birthday in it's various forms.
