On display in 2021. The big Mikado is fenced in today, but must have been an impressive sight in action in a Hokkaido winter. In fact it is displayed with a small snowplough fitted - very appropriate for Hokkaido.

Although it is visible in other photos of the loco, here is a close up of the Giesl ejector exhaust. This fitment should have improved the draught of the loco and the fuel economy whilst also increasing the power output. The device had widespread use in Europe and even on colliery tank engines in the UK.

Close up photo of the driver's cab window. Notice the circular glass which would rotate in operation to throw off rainwater. This is a left hand drive loco so we are on the left side of the engine here.
