Russian Steam Locomotives
November 16th, 2007We've received a list of about 1400 steam locomotives in Russia, and are working on getting them converted to our database format and installed on the system. We hope to have most of them online by Monday or thereabouts.
I'm reasonably sure that this list represents only a fraction of the locomotives, particularly derelict ones remaining in Russia, but its a start.
I'll follow up here as the data comes on line.

Doug
New/Old Feature
July 16th, 2007The steamlocomotive.info website has the capability to add a banner above each locomotive display page promoting the website of the locomotive's owner. See the link below of an example on an East Broad Top locomotive:
The banner above the locomotive photo was supplied by the East Broad Top folks. If you're responsible for a steam locomotive and would like to have our site display a banner with a link to your website when your locomotive is viewed, here's the deal:
1. The banner can be a maximum of 640x80 pixels, and should be a Jpeg or a GIF.
2. You should provide a URL for your website for the system to link to when your banner is clicked.
These two items can be emailed to info@steamlocomotive.info or dougb@sunserver.com. Be sure to clearly identify the locomotive (or locomotives) for which the banner is being provided.
We hope you'll find the feature useful.
Regards,
Doug
More Locomotives

The 'Forums' Menu Item
July 8th, 2007When we originally started steamlocomotive.info in September of 2002, we thought that there was a place for a forum system that would cover the topic of steamlocomotives. We tried Webbbs, Ikonboard, and phpBB in various formats ranging from completely unmoderated to harshly moderated.
The results? Nobody was much interested. There were too many excellent steam/preservation related forums out there. The phpBB system was a pain to administer, with 99% of the registrations coming from spammers, and 99% of the posts coming from spammers who sneaked past the registration process.
For about 9 months, the phpBB forum connected to steamlocomtive.info has been shut down. Today, it returns, sort of. All the forum buttons in the system will now take you directly to The Interchange, the phpBB forum of Railway Preservation News.
This has been done with their permission and in the hope that it will serve a need.

Doug
Links Updates
July 5th, 2007I hate to admit it, but the 'Links' portion of the website has been broken since we've moved to our new server. Finally got some free time, and repaired the management interface so that submitted links can be approved, or for that matter, disapproved.
So please feel free to submit links, they'll usually appear on line within a day or two. We approved over 370 of them today.

Doug
